Firstly, NO. Well maybe, it’s a complicated answer so keep reading. Now before I begin I'm sure you will find hundreds of articles and posts stating a variety of facts and science based research around training in target heart rate zones for fat loss while completing cardio or that compound exercises like squats or burpees e.g. the devil, are going to be best for burning calories. I am not going to dispute that would be the most EFFECTIVE, but does that mean they are the best? I don't think so.

The best exercise to me is a type of exercise you enjoy and most importantly, similarly to nutrition, is a type of exercise you are likely to complete regularly and even better that you are excited to do each time. Let’s say for example, if I told you that 100 burpees & 30 minutes on a treadmill at 70% maximum heart rate every day was most effective for fat loss but you HATED burpees with a passion and were bored on a treadmill after 30 seconds; then how long are you likely to adhere to that training routine? My guess, not long at all. As a PT with almost 9 years of experience I know this is true because I did it for many of my early years training clients. I didn't really consider the enjoyment factor for clients, I simply told them to do what I knew would work and guess what? Those clients either didn't get results or quit the gym all together. If you force yourself to do something, even with the best will in the world you might last 6 months, maybe even 12 but if you find a form of exercise that is something you love, something you truly enjoy - you are on to a winner.
This is why you see such strong communities in Boxing gyms, Jiujitsu schools and Crossfit boxes. These people love that kind of exercise or workout so they tend to be there for a long time and build relationships with like minded people. It’s ok if you don’t know what you enjoy yet. Maybe it’s as simple as you like putting a podcast on and walking the dog for an hour each morning, completing a hot yoga class or the complete opposite and you love powerlifting or strength training. Go and try different types of exercise to find what is BEST for you!

So, in summary, sit ups might be the best fat burning exercise if you truly love them. You may also need to go to the hospital to have a brain scan if this is the case, but you do you.
